Interior Designer


Interior design involves all aspects of planning and execution of the task of decorating the interiors of a space, be it a home, or office or a temporary exhibit or a commercial establishment.

There is no well-defined career path or structure for interior design career.  Many interior designers are self employed and they are usually compensated either by hour or by a given project. They need to build reputation over a period, typically over a few years and a number of projects to command high compensation. However there are reputed firms and companies in the interior design field where the new entrants can work and gain experience.

Education:  Degree or diploma in relevant field like Interior Design, Architecture or Fashion and Interior Design.


  1. Technical skills especially the ability to use design related tools like AutoCAD etc.
  2. Good creativity and imagination especially spatial awareness is a must.
  3. Ability to work under pressure and attention to detail.
  4. Client facing skills especially excellent communication and negotiation and persuasion skills are needed.


This is a fictitious calendar of an Interior Designer  work schedule and is meant to give an idea of the different tasks that the professional performs and different people that the professional needs to coordinate with.

Given below is a typical Day In The Life of an Interior Designer,

Context DILO:

 A freelance interior designer having her own boutique with a showroom in an upscale part of the town.

DILO, Day In The Life of:

Time Task
9:00 am – 10:00 am Check emails. Review interior design websites and magazines. Make notes on new trends
10:00am – 12:00 noon Meeting with a client getting their house remodeled. Plan is approved. Going over the catalogue and a few pieces of the furniture and the decorative items in the show room to finalize the fixtures in the house.
12:00 noon – 2:00 pm Working lunch with a new corporate client. Go over the previous work done for other corporate clients and discuss the needs of this new client.
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Head to the show villa in a new development. Check the furniture that’s arrived. Identify the issues with the order. Get the furniture and fixtures arranged in the villa.
4:00 pm – 6:00 pm Meeting with the development manager to review the decoration plan for the proposed club house in the development. Discuss the European theme.
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Head back to the show room. Sell a few items to tourists. Calls with vendors. Close the show room and head back home.
